ahhhhh.....

Getting away from work is nice.

Taking a couple days off from work this weekend so Rubi and I can spend a couple of days in Indianapolis at the Indianapolis Film Festival. She'll also get to hit a couple of scrapbooking stores.

Rubi's parents (they rock!) are taking all three kids for the weekend so it's just Rubi and I going. We're calling an early anniversary celebration.

Our 13th anniversary is next month. The same weekend as Elizabeth's birthday and Mother's Day. We're spreading the celebrating out. Our celebration is this weekend. Mom's Day is on Mom's day, and we're having Elizabeth's birthday party the following weekend.

We will miss most of the celebrating of Guild Wars 2nd birthday on-line this week. Lots of cool in-game stuff this weekend. It is sad that we're kinda disappointed that we're going to miss that.

Star Wars Music Meme

A member of my local Star Wars FanForce Club is doing some kind of research paper for college about the music of Star Wars.  The questions she asked for her research are below.  Feel free to post your own answers as a meme!

-----------------

Age: 33

Occupation: Emergency Communications Supervisor

Do you play any instruments? No.

What kind of music do you listen to on a regular basis? Contemporary Christian, movie soundtracks, whatever's on the radio

Describe your first experience with the Star Wars trilogy? (Age, circumstances, first impressions, etc)
I saw it when I was about 5 at the theater with my older brother and sister and some of their friends one Sunday after church - this was 1977 or 78. I remember really liking it and Star Wars has been a part of my life since then: toys, cartoons, sequels, soundtracks, video tapes, books, prequels, internet, dvds, fanclub.

What is the first image that comes to mind when you hear the Star Wars theme? The opening scroll.

Do you own the soundtracks? If so, how many? I used to have at least one copy of each - but I sold them off after I ripped them to mp3.

How often do you listen to the soundtracks? At least once a week.

What kind of listening devices do you use when listening to music? Mostly playback from my PC, sometimes on a portable device.

What is your favorite piece from the soundtracks and why? Probably the Hologram/Binary Sunset piece - it's the first time we're introduced to that slow thoughtful piece of music that will become "Luke's Theme" and ultimately the "Jedi Theme" or "the Force Theme" that is used over and over in the movies.
I like all the finale pieces from the original trilogy, especially the one from ESB. I like Across the Stars and Duel of the Fates. I like the finale pieces from AotC and RotS. And I like the Ewok Theme (celebrate the love) by that barbershop quartet and the remix by Meco.

How has your perception of the soundtracks changed over time? I've only grown to like the SW soundtracks more and more, and appreciate them more for their quality as music than just as "movie music".

THINKs April 6 2007

Another installment of the various and sundry items I find of interest around the digital world.

First off, here's an article about an easier way to post images in webposts.

This is just funny as all get out.

Here is a short list of ways to not be late.

For fans of Heroes, a report from a panel with the cast and crew.

I want one of these. Especially if it transforms into a car. Especially a vegetable oil powered car.

How cool is this?

On a side note. Rubi is doing way better in Guild Wars than I am. She's level 19 already and much further along in the game. My two characters are still trudging away at level 13 and are barely into the game. It'd be much more fun if we had another computer and another copy of Guild Wars so we could play together.

THINKS: Kev's term combining the words Things and Links: an assortment of images, links, games, trivia, memes, minutia, and whatnot found while browsing and mentioned collectively in a blog or message-board posts.

Things You Never Knew About Your Cell Phone

I received the following information from my boss. I can't vouch for any of it but the fifth item, which I have programmed into my contact list and use when I need it.

There are a few things that can be done in times of grave emergencies.
Your mobile phone can actually be a life saver or an emergency tool for
survival. Check out the things that you can do with it:

FIRST
Subject: Emergency
The Emergency Number worldwide for Mobile is 112.
If you find yourself out of the coverage area of your mobile; network
and there is an emergency, dial 112 and the mobile will search any
existing network to establish the emergency number for you, and
interestingly this number 112 can be dialed even if the keypad
is locked.
..
SECOND
Subject: Have you locked your keys in the car?
Does your car have remote keyless entry? This may come in handy
someday.
Good reason to own a cell phone: If you lock your keys in the car
and the spare keys are at home, call someone at home on their cell
phone from your cell phone. Hold your cell phone about a foot from your
car door and have the person at your home press the unlock button,
holding it near the mobile phone on their end.
Your car will unlock. Saves someone from having to drive your keys to
you. Distance is no object. You could be hundreds of miles away, and if
you can reach someone who has the other "remote" for your car, you can
unlock the doors (or the trunk).
Editor's Note: It works fine! We tried it out and it unlocked our car
over a cell phone!

THIRD
Subject: Hidden Battery Power
Imagine your cell battery is very low. To activate, press the keys
*3370# Your cell will restart with this reserve and the instrument
will show a 50% increase in battery. This reserve will get charged when
you charge your cell next time.

FOURTH
How to disable a STOLEN mobile phone?
To check your Mobile phone's serial number, key in the following
digits on your phone: * # 0 6 # A 15 digit code will appear on the screen.
This number is unique to your handset. Write it down and keep it
somewhere safe. When your phone get stolen, you can phone your service
provider and give them this code. They will then be able to block your
handset so even if the thief changes the SIM card, your phone will be
totally useless. You probably won't get your phone back, but at least you
know that whoever stole it can't use/sell it either. If everybody does this,
there would be no point in people stealing mobile phones.

And Finally....

FIFTH
Cell phone companies are charging us $1.00 to $1.75 or more for 411
information calls when they don't have to.
Most of us do not carry a telephone directory in our vehicle, which makes this situation even more of a problem. When you need to use the 411 information option, simply dial: (800) FREE 411, or (800) 373-3411 without incurring any charge at all. Program this into your cell
phone now.

This is the kind of information people don't mind receiving, so pass it
on to your family and friends.

As an addendum: the Free 411 is free because they make you listen to advertisements during your call. I don't mind spending the few extra seconds on those to avoid incurring the normal fee to call information.

Also, I feel it necessary to mention that, here in the United States of America, the emergency number is still 9-1-1. We've been taught that since childhood. However, technology has changed the way 9-1-1 gets your call. Cell phones only deliver at most your call back number and GPS coordinates that can get responders to within a few blocks or a few houses of your area. And GPS can't tell us if you're on the 10th floor of a building. At the least, 9-1-1 doesn't get any information about your location or call-back number. If you need to call 9-1-1 from your cell, know where you are and tell the call-taker that when you are asked.

If you use your computer to make calls, commonly called VoIP, and with company names like Vonage, you might not even have access to calling 9-1-1. Or, if you call 9-1-1, your call might go to a national answering center instead of your local 9-1-1. Then they have to transfer your call to what they hope is the correct local 9-1-1 - and remember, "Seconds save lives."

Speaka da English

At work, we use Language Line, a national professional translation service for non-English-speaking callers to better facilitate our emergency response. The latest Language Line newsletter included the following interesting article, copied verbatim here for your enjoyment!

Why is English difficult to learn?

Because there are so many odd elements, exceptions, peculiar spellings, and
strange pronunciations.

If English is your second language, you are no doubt aware of this fact!

Consider, for example:

1) The bandage was wound around the wound.
2) The farm was used to
produce produce.
3) The dump was so full that it had to refuse more
refuse.
4) We must polish the Polish furniture.

5) He could lead if he would get the lead out.
6) The soldier decided to
desert his dessert in the desert.
7) Since there is no time like the present,
he thought it was time to present the present.
8) A bass was painted on the
head of the bass drum.

9) When shot at, the dove dove into the bushes.
10) I did not object to
the object.
11) The insurance was invalid for the invalid.
12) There was a
row among the oarsmen about how to row.

13) They were too close to the door to close it.
14) The buck does funny
things when the does are present.
15) A seamstress and a sewer fell down into
a sewer line.
16) To help with planting, the farmer taught his sow to
sow.

17) The wind was too strong to wind the sail.
18) After a number of
injections my jaw got number.
19) Upon seeing the tear in the painting I shed
a tear.

20) I had to subject the subject to a series of tests.
21) How can I
intimate this to my most intimate friend?
