Whee!

This was definitely the weekend for goofy and unflattering photos of me. Friday night, at my sister's apartment, celebrating her birthday with friends:

Photobucket

All I can think of looking at this is "beached whale", lol. This was in between the restaurant and going out dancing.

Then again Saturday night, going out to dinner celebrate a coworker's birthday. We all spent the last two hours of work getting ready: hair, makeup, changing clothes, etc. I'd been running around taking pics of everyone getting ready, so someone returned the favor with this oh so flattering shot of me redoing my toenail polish.

Photobucket

NICE. Obviously I hadn't done my hair yet - that's an attractive part smack down the middle. And I apparently haven't had sunlight on my body in about 6 years. (Ironically enough, I had a raging sunburn on my chest, back, and face when this shot was taken. Guess none of that UV filtered down to my legs...)

However, I had the most enjoyable weekend I've had in quite a while, so a few blackmail shots are worth it!

And now for something completely different.

Opinions please:

Whirlpool workers have been suspended for smoking as all 39 of them had reportedly claimed they were non-smokers on their health insurance.
The company requires smokers to pay an extra $500 in insurance premiums. A company spokesperson said the workers were seen smoking in designated smoking areas outside the plant.
Whirlpool considers that falsifying documents, a serious offense. More suspensions could come later.

The headline for this article reads: "Whirlpool workers suspended for smoking".

Whee! Nothing like putting a spin on the facts! If I'm not mistaken, these employees were suspended for lying on their insurance paperwork to save $500. Not for smoking. They lied, they got caught, they faced consequences. It seems fairly straightforward to me. However, there are lots of local opinions that say different. Mostly along the lines of "They're discriminating against smokers!!1!!1!"

What do you guys think?

What is your name? What is your quest?

And yes, what is the air-speed velocity of an unladen swallow? (I'm a little ashamed of myself, that I had to Google that to get the quote just right.)

I'm curious - those of you reading. Where are you from? How did you find your way here? Do tell!

Yet again!

Another earthquake last night. Somehow I managed to sleep through this one, I guess we're getting used to them. ;-) 4.5, about 20 seconds long.

Enough already.

"Enchanted" by this little ditty...

I loved this movie, and loved this song so much I had to put the video on my MySpace page.

It's a very, very sweet song, but also hilarious. With Robert being all cynical and annoyed the whole time, and poor Edward vaulting off the bridge and getting flattened, I laughed and said "awww" pretty much the whole time.

And again.

4.5 aftershock. Nice long one too - long enough for me to get a bit scared again. Wonder how long these will go on? I have to work today, in a few hours. The entire front of the building is plate glass. I'm interested to see what they look like during the tremors. (And I'll be staying far away from them, just in case. Heh.)

Earthquake!

Well, everyone else is talking about it this morning, I may as well hop on the bandwagon.

Kev and I were very rudely woken up this morning by what they're currently calling a 5.4 earthquake. I woke up first, rolled over, poked Kev, and said "What are you DOING?" Then I realized that yes, the bed was shaking, but I could hear things rattling all over the house as well.

It was a longer one than the last one that hit here - maybe 45-60 seconds. Long enough to be kind of scary.

We turned on the radio to hear a special bulletin. "Yes, it was an earthquake. No, no damage reported yet." They said the phones at 911 were going crazy, so Kev is VERYHAPPY not to be at work right now.

I hopped out of bed - couldn't go back to sleep for a bit after that, and started looking up news stories.

Now I'm looking up stories and chatting w/my friend Shawn, who is making me laugh so hard I'm afraid I'll wake the kids.

One news article included a mention that the earthquake shook the bedside dresser of some random woman in Northern Indiana. His comment on that: "are they just driving around with a large bullhorn saying "WHO WANTS TO TALK TO THE NEWS ABOUT THEIR EXPERIENCE? wE'LL GIVE YOU WENDY'S COUPONS"".

[giggle]

Not much else to tell. It happened, it was scary, everyone's okay, now it's done. But it will be all everyone in the city talks about all day. So that'll be interesting.

Phooey.

Well, I got a slight reprieve. One month of taking little pills before the doctors commence with the cutting.

If the pills work, we may be able to skip surgery altogether, we'll just have to see.

(Catching up those who don't know - scar tissue from a previous surgery is getting out of control and too painful. That's the Cliff Notes version.)

More quality time w/the doctors today.

Huzzah. (That's sarcasm...) Heading in for more testing, etc. today. Sigh. My goal is "please don't find anything that will make you have to cut me open.", and I'm feeling pretty positive about it. Heh.

Thanks, you guys sending prayers and positive thoughts, etc. [cuddles Val] Hopefully everything will be figured out and fixed by this afternoon.

Sigh.

"The Good Stuff"

Gonna be mushy and sappy this morning. I like sweet talk as much as the next girl - "I love you, you're all I think of, soulmate, etc.". But true love, the good stuff, the stuff you can count on...whoo.

Last night my Kev spent 9.5 hours, all told, being my hero. Fetching Aleve. Letting me lean on his arm and walking slowly. Fetching more Aleve. Letting me lie down with my head in his lap. Helping me change into pajamas. Tucking me in on the sofa. Checking on me every 2 minutes, all "can I get you anything else?". Fetching more Aleve. Helping me change back into my clothes. Driving me to the hospital. Holding my hand in the waiting room and telling me "Just squeeze my hand." Helping me change into a hospital gown. Practically lifting me onto the bed. Tucking me in with those thin little hospital blankets because it was cold in the room. Helping me shift positions 75 times. Checking to make sure my gown was still tied in the back and that the blankets were still keeping me warm. And on and on until I was back home, in pajamas, full of drugs, and tucked into bed.

Well, that's not quite true. Because even this morning, he was continuing. Ran an errand and filled prescriptions for me this morning, even though it meant he was going to be hard pressed to get to work on time. Made sure I had a way to contact him today if I needed anything.

That's the good stuff. The real thing, that you can count on, more than all the sweet, loving words in the world.

<3 Kev.

Go Bunnies, Go Bunnies!

Catherine's very first soccer game was today. Of course, after an absolutely gorgeous week, the weather was disgusting. It was windy, freezing, and the fields were swamps after tons of rain. But the kids had fun. They're calling themselves the Blue Bunnies, and we soccer parents kept laughing at hearing the coach shout "Go Bunnies!!"

Take a look!

Catherine and a few of her teammates. Catherine is the one in pigtails. I also got a kick out of little miss skull hat on the left. So cute.

Kev and I freezing our butts off on the bleachers:

Coach has priorities. That Starbucks cup didn't leave his hand the entire game:
Photobucket

(I keed, he's a great guy.)

Coach: "Hey Catherine, you're goalie. Put this on."

Catherine: "..." (She's alone in the photo because gameplay resumed while she pondered the wad of fabric that had just been tossed at her, and everyone else was at the other end of the field.)

Photobucket

Coach finally notices and runs over to help. (After having someone hold his coffee.)

Photobucket

And...finally all set.

I'm the cold natured one in the family, always wrapped in blankets and jackets around the house, so I was DYING. Kev wound up wrapping both blankets around me:

Elizabeth and Alexander were riveted by the game. Couldnt' take their eyes off of the action.

Randomage.

The other day I was dancing around the living room like a fool to the newest song to catch my attention. Kev watched for a bit, then patted my cheek and said "It's a good thing your'e pretty." [shrug] It's good to have at least one redeeming quality, hee hee!

(That also brings up something else that is beginning to interest me, Final Fantasy. Darn you, Astara...)

Today I discovered Donut Bank's Turtle Latte. Good grief that's good stuff. Chocolate, caramel, and hazelnut. I like my coffee so foo-foo-ed up that it's barely coffee anymore, so this stuff was right up my alley. Incredibly rich, though, I couldn't finish it. Delicious. And fat free, I'm certain of it.

Can anyone recommend a good non-MMO RPG? I'm a Guild Wars girl, so I need graphics that are at least that gorgeous, and shoot-em-up stuff isn't my style. (I played an ele in GW - one friend called me his "Dutchess of nuke-em") Preferably PC, not console.

Oh, hey, if you are clothes shopping? When you are trying on clothes that don't belong to you? PICK 'EM UP OFF THE FLOOR. Seriously, people, why would you take a half dozen $400 evening gowns, and throw them on the floor of the fitting room after you've taken them off, and WALK ON THEM. I swear, those are the same people that come to me whining all "this has a snag in it, will you take something off the price for that?" No, lady, it's snagged because jerks like your daughter think they're too good to pick up after themselves, then walk on them.

Oh yeah, I work retail and prom season is getting to me a bit. Ahem.

This has taken up way too much of my time this week...

but it was fun and pretty cool. I've been saying for ages that I want to try taking advantage of a service that my grocery shopping places offer, and just haven't gotten around to it. I spent a lot of time on it this week, researching how it worked and learning the systems, but the time it saved in the end, and will continue to save, more than made up for it.

So this past week, I took advantage of Sam's Club Click N Pull, and Schnucks Express Connection. Click N Pull is free, Schnucks charges a small fee that I think is WELL worth it. ($7 to go pick it up, $16 to have it delivered to your house.)

So, Click N Pull first. Lots of stops and starts here, that included finding out my membership was due for renewal, and two or three days in which the Sam's website absolutely would. not. load. on our home computer. I have no clue still what that was all about. I tried it on three computers elsewhere, it all worked. Only in our house was the weird Sam's Club site blocking force field. It eventually went away on it's own and we never figured out what was up. Once I finally got going, it was wonderful. Navigating the "aisles" was very easy once I got the hang of it. After a while though, I got lazy and just typed in "Chex Mix", or "juice", or "bacon" in the search bar and things went much faster.

This also gave me a great little bonus. You know how, when you're shopping online, off to the side or bottom there will be a "you might also like" or "customers who bought this also bought..." thing? To try to get you to buy more? When I went to purchase Chex Mix, Sam's hilariously offered me a men's velour robe and some blue jeans. Goldfish crackers offered up a ladies' diamond watch. Regular grocery shopping isn't usually that funny, so that was nice.

As you're shopping, you can also choose to "add to list" for each item you select. So if you tend to buy some of the same things at each shopping trip, like I do, you can create and save a shopping list to save time on future purchases. Good thinking on their part. So the shopping went very smoothly, as did checkout. I just chose to pay at the store, chose my pickup time, and was done.

Pickup went very well too. It took about ten minutes to go in, have someone pull our order and bring it up, pay, and leave. I loved this, and will absolutely do it from now on.

Schnucks went well too, only there were a few drawbacks. I'm pretty sure that their entire inventory wasn't available on the website. Which means that I didn't get a few things that I wanted. Navigation of the aisles was a bit more confusing, but I think that stems from the "not everything instore is avail. on the site" thing. Once I went for pickup though, I was delighted. My pickup time was scheduled for "5:00-8:00 PM" on Thursday. We happened to finish our errands early, so we stopped by at 4:15 with fingers crossed. Our order was completely ready to go. Someone went to get it while we paid at customer service, which meant we got to skip the regular checkout line. The employee was back in record time with a loaded cart. The cart itself was very cold, which made me laugh - obviously they packed our order into the cart, then just shoved the whole thing into a walk in fridge. Which, hey, great! Sam's Club could learn from that - we had to wait longer because they were pulling our cold items. I loved this too, and will absolutely keep using it.

A few small drawbacks. As I mentioned, Schnucks had a more limited selection than they would have instore, which means I'm going to have to actually go pick up three things on a second trip. Also, I wasn't thrilled with the produce - I purchased tomatoes, apples, grapes, and bananas. While they were okay, they weren't what I would have chosen myself.

The pros, though: I saved a ton of time, and money. When shopping like this, I waste much less time wandering around picking up impulse purchases. My total grocery bill was almost $100 less than normal, and that's including the Sam's Club $40 membership renewal. Kev and I took the time we normally would have spent grocery shopping having a nice lunch at Panera, and just hanging out together. Yep, TOTALLY worth it.

Next time, I'll skip ordering produce online. I'll probably just choose and purchase it myself when I go to pick up the rest of my order.

Love this service. You should too. Use it.

Blade runners! Or something...

Kev and I have taken up inline skating. We wanted to start doing something together outdoors and thought it'd be fun to try that. No broken bones or even falls yet. We were discussing where to start our little adventure, and briefly considered the hospital parking lot. Wide open space, and perfect location. Hee!

In the end, we settled on a pretty parklike area near the kids school, near a lake. The area is frequented by joggers, bikers, and now two fairly clumsy inline skaters.

There are lots of cries of "Whoooa!", and flailing of arms, but it's so fun. (Once, I got up some speed and flew by Kevin shouting in a mild panic "It's gonna hurt when I fallllll!")

Thursday we were all excited because the weather was nasty, but the local rink had open skate from 1-3 PM. Ooh, that's when the kids are in school! Yay, off we go!

Oh. Right. Homeschool kids. Lots of them. Including one pushing his baby sister in a stroller around and around and around the rink. And the music: Hannah Montana, HSM, and Kidz Bop. Which I don't object to as a whole, but I'd geared myself up for some adult time, and the kid invasion wound up irritating me. Once they took a request for Alvin and the Chipmunks "Santa Claus Is Coming To Town", I was pretty much done.

Kev looked at me during a particularly wretched version of a Queen song and said "I have better Queen remixes at home." I responded by snarling "THE AMISH have better Queen remixes than this", and we took off our skates and left.

Bad me for being cranky. I love kids - it's why I have three of them, and last winter in Disney World, I sang and danced along to the HSM show as enthusiastically as my children. But sometimes you want some adult time. And not getting it when I expected it made me crabby. So shame on me, I'll be nicer next time!
