Now... reading his post, and some of the comments, it seems more like he's saying there isn't an immediate in-the-works sequel. It doesn't, to me, sound like he's saying Serenity is gone for good.

Yeah, the guy's got Wonder Woman, X-men, and hopefully a TV movie about Spike on his plate before doing anything more with that crew. Maybe we haven't seen the last of them and I wouldn't sweat it. To put things in perspective:
Star Trek the tv show: cancelled in 1969.
Star Trek the Motion Picture? 1979.
