Who said anything about a test?
Posted By kevbayer at 3/29/2005 08:58:00 PM
Pop quiz (from MCF no less... I'd have expected it from Chris, he's a teacher!):
1) What do you do for a living? I'm a "Communications Supervisor" at the primary Public Safety Answering Point (PSAP) for my city and county. That means I'm a 2nd shift (3 p.m.-11p.m.) on-duty supervisor at 9-1-1. We take the 9-1-1 calls and dispatch law enforcement and fire services. Medical calls we transfer to the ambulance service.
2) Is it what you thought it would be? Is the job what I expected? Yeah, pretty much. Is this what I thought I'd be doing with my college degree in Radio/Television Communications? No. But I wouldn't trade this job for another one. I like what I do and I get paid really well for doing it.
3) If it isn't, do you ever have moments where you realize you're doing something you like and are good at? I'm not so sure I'm good at it, but I do enjoy it and I get the job done, and I have the respect of my boss and probably most of my co-workers.

You scored as Intrapersonal. You prefer your own inner world, you like to be alone, and you are aware of your own strengths, weaknesses, and feelings. You learn best by engaging in independent study projects rather than working on group projects. People like you include entrepreneurs, philosophers and psychologists.

Clowns

What's the deal with clowns?
For some reason, we got to talking about them at work today...
Some people love clowns.
Some people abhor clowns.
Some people are indifferent...
I don't dislike clowns...
I just don't understand them. The clowns around here are the kind that dress up like hobos. Ratty clothing, oversized shoes, sad faces, and rainbow hair.
Where's the humor in homeless people with radioactive hair and unusually big feet?
I prefer funny clowns. Loud clothing (not ugly clothing), big smiley face, slapstick antics...
I even prefer purple business suit-wearing, homicidal clowns to the depressing bum clowns.
Unless they start breathing the helium and talking funny. I like anybody that does that.
I once breathed helium and starting making passes at my wife in that voice - but that's another story.
Clowns... sheesh. I prefer Xander's method for dealing with them.
Oh, now I remember how we got on the subject of clowns... someone called 9-1-1 and said they saw someone wearing a mime mask driving a car and thought it was suspicious.

Hannibal Smith You are 30% crazy and 89% bad-a$$ed. |
You walk around in funny costumes, but compared to your friends you're Joe Average. Your level head and cool calculations always seem to do the trick. There's no doubt about it, you are the mastermind full of schemes and stratagems. And at the end of the day you can always light your cigar and bask in the personal victory of a plan that has come together. |

I'm helping design a new Intranet for work.
One of things I'm including is syndicated headline feeds from a couple of work-related blogs. Not knowing anything useful about programming, I had to find someone else to create the code for the feeds to appear on the page.
Enter RSS Digest.
They politely ask you to include a link back to them on the page you are displaying their code, or they might turn off your feed. Well, seeing as how I'm using their code on a private intranet sight not accessible by the general public, I'm inlcuding a linkback here. And I'll make a nifty little button using the Weather Channel's handy current weather conditions script on the intranet too.
EDITED: Had to re-edit this post because blogger lost part of it and ran some of it together and had the weather channel link as the button maker link. oops.

Trek Quiz
Posted By kevbayer at 3/24/2005 09:23:00 PM
This one is interesting considering I consider myself more of a fan than just an "appreciator". I'm not one of those die-hard fans that dresses up and attends cons and collects everything and thinks Shatner is a deity, but I enjoy the shows... well, not Enterprise, really - even though I watched it. I've seen, probably, almost episode of every series except Enterprise and DS9, even though DS9 is my favorite. I left after the first season or part of the 2nd season and didn't come back until I heard Worf was crossing over, then I was hooked.
Trekkie Appreciator Survey Says... |
You don't mind Star Trek and have obviously watched a couple of episodes or movies, but you don't live or breathe the world. Not to bad! You've managed to tread the fine line between sci-fi buff and Star Trek nerd (otherwise known as the difference between enjoying Star Trek for its entertainment value and running around with a batleth quoting Klingon battle poetry). My darling's going to kill me...

but I'm okay with that at the moment. The wonderful, wonderful man at Domino's made an exception for me. My sad little order of chicken kickers and a Diet Coke didn't meet the minimum delivery requirement, but he didn't even hesitate to make an exception and send my goodies on their way anyway.
That's my "my night stinks" food. I'm having a lousy night, brought on by a 90 minute fight with the kids. That quality time was spent trying to make them clean up the F.A.O. Schwarz annex in the playroom. The fun culminated with me flipping out, yelling a LOT, and sending the whole pack of them to bed. I feel a yard sale coming on. Or maybe a trip to Goodwill. Less lucrative, but quicker.
Upside? I'm off to crop at a good friend's house on the other side of town in the morning. I just managed to score a ride from another friend who's attending, thus saving a bit of insanely expensive gas. ($2.16 a gallon as of this morning. I know a lot of parts of the country are paying more, but it still just makes me choke.)

You're steady, organizes, and determined to achieve your dreams. You tend to play it conservative, going by the rules (at least the practical ones). You'll likely reach the top. And when you do, you'll be honorable and responsible. Focus on happiness. Don't let your goals distract you from fun! Don't be too set in your ways, and you'll be more of a success than you ever dreamed of. |

Posted By kevbayer at 3/22/2005 10:07:00 PM
I've apparently turned this into the quiz blog. -Sorry.
Real life has been trumping blogging frequently lately.
I have a new project at work - another supervisor and I are designing and initiating a new intranet for our department. We want it to be a very professional looking and useable tool, unlike the rest of the public safety intranet, which looks like something I designed on geocities back in 1994 to show off all of my science fiction links. In addition to that, I have my normal project this time of year: National Public Safety Telecommunications Week (that link is for the national organization that started it, not my department!). I chair the committee at my department that organizes "events" for what we refere to as Dispatchers' Week (that's easier to say than NPSTW!). I had a class last week on developing SOPs. They want to send me another class in June for basic supervisor stuff. All that is in addition to my regular duties and on-going projects at work. All of which are routinely interrupted by that darn phone ringing with people calling 9-1-1 saying they have an emergency.
Sheesh.
Some people.
And I read more blogs than I write.
You should see the stack of trade magazines that I've got stacking up because I haven't had time to read them. That stack is at least a foot high.
Plus some days, during the day when I'm not at work (I work evenings), I get to run kids to school, Rubi to work, do laundry, load the dishwasher, run errands, take a nap (gotta get that in there or I'll fall asleep at work), pick up Rubi from work, etc etc.
And I can't think of a good wrap-up for this post, my relief should be here soon and my mind is now focused on going home, taking decongestants/antihistamines (Rubi I'd better not have caught your cold), and sleeping.
Sleep good.

The Bayer Family Status
Posted By kevbayer at 3/19/2005 03:28:00 PM
I've seen mention lately of many problems with Blogger. Some people are even leaving for "greener" pastures.
Not me. I have to stay here. I don't have my own server or hosted space, so Kevin and Rubi and the rest of The Bayer Family will stay right here.
I haven't personally had any problems with Blogger. I know there was commenting problem last week. But other than that... nada for me.
Been busy working and, well, living life as a husband and father of three.

Why do you think I have this outrageous accent?
Posted By kevbayer at 3/13/2005 11:30:00 AM
You are 'French'. In the nineteenth century, it
was the international language of diplomacy.
It is a 'beautiful' language, meaning that it
is really just a low-fidelity copy of Latin.
You know the importance of communicating
'diplomatically', which for you means both
being polite and friendly when necessary and
using sophisticated, vicious sarcasm when
appropriate. Your life is guided by either
existentialism or nihilism, depending on the
weather. You have a certain appreciation for
the finer things in life, which is a diplomatic
way of saying that you are a disgusting
hedonist. Your problem is that French has been
obsolete for a long time.
What obsolete skill are you?

Blog Party II
Posted By kevbayer at 3/11/2005 10:58:00 AM
MCF's having a "Blog Party II".
I agree with him. Friday is a good day for parties!
Today's theme for the party is: Three Favorite Sitcom Supporting Characters.
Here are mine:
Radar from MASH: with his ESP on in-coming helicopters, his sense of wonder at the world around him, his relationship to his family back in the States, and his Teddy Bear (of which Big Bird on Sesame Street has the same type of bear, named Radar). Cpl. Walter Eugene 'Radar' O'Reilly makes my list.
Frasier Crane on Cheers: "I'm running with scissors!" "Everybody Wang Chung tonight!" He was such a great supporting character, they gave him his own spin-off. Cliff "It's a little known fact" Clavin gets an honorable mention.
Evil Monkey from Family Guy. We know he's in the closet. Chris knows he's in the closet. No one else knows he's in the closet. Okay, really anybody that's not just gross from Family Guy makes the list.

Gettin' my cranky on.
Posted By Rubi at 3/09/2005 06:30:00 PM
Gah. I'm so grumpy today. And I'm even grumpier because I have no good reason to be grumpy. (Grumpy grumpy grumpy...the word just loses Alll meaning.)
Moving on. Tomorrow is the day I leave on my trip. I'll be here with three good friends:
http://www.ckscrapbookevents.com/tn2005/
I have no sense of anticipation whatsoever. I'm cranky, and lethargic, and in a kind of packing fugue state. (Lordy, did I even spell that right? I'm stupider than usual tonight.) The task of packing for a lousy four day trip seems so overwhelming I'm just completely blocking it out. All I can think is that I'm meeting 15 ladies for dinner Friday night, and I don't have a shirt in the right colors. (Shut up. It's a thing - there will be lots of photos and we're all supposed to be wearing specific colors.) I have a sinking feeling I'll be at Target in the morning after dropping Elizabeth off at school, frantically trying to find a long sleeved shirt in the damnable sherbert-y colors that wash me out.
What the frilly heck is wrong with me? For weeks, I've been so jazzed about this trip that my voice has permanantly risen an octave. Now that it's here, all I can think is "Hey, I need to get the kids in bed, because American Idol is on in 15, and I want to see the girl with the funny name and stupid cowgirl outfit."
Gettin' my cranky on.
I hate memes.

1) What is your favorite kitchen appliance? What? Huh? I don't know, I guess the stove. Because, you know, it cooks things.
2) What kind of cookware do you have? Whatever was cheap at the time. I'd love to have some good long lasting stuff.
3) What color are your countertops and cabinets? Yeah, what Kev said. Why am I answering this thing? My answers are going to be pretty much the same as his.
4) Name one kitchen appliance or gadget that you wish you had. New range. The flat top kind.
5) Describe your dream kitchen. Big, spacious. HUGE fridge and freezer. Island in the middle with electrics and running water. Tons of storage space. Walk-in pantry. Breakfast nook with bar stool seating. Room for eat in kitchen (I can't stand separate "formal" dining rooms - waste of space.)

Sunday Brunch for March 6, 2005
Posted By kevbayer at 3/06/2005 01:02:00 PM
1) What is your favorite kitchen appliance? The phone. For ordering take out.
2) What kind of cookware do you have? Whatever was cheap at the time. And a couple of Pampered Chef things that Rubi insisted on.
3) What color are your countertops and cabinets? Countertop: Old nasty house yellowish-wood colored. Cabinets: uh... kind of in-between right now. They're kind of sanded down to basic wood, with some leftover paint on them that difficult to remove (in various colors). The doors are in the garage (sanded) waiting to be painted, as are the base cabinets (still hung on the wall and full of dishware).
4) Name one kitchen appliance or gadget that you wish you had. A housekeeper to cook and clean for us. Okay, uhm... a professional grade food processor or mixer.
5) Describe your dream kitchen. Big, spacious. HUGE fridge and freezer. Island in the middle with electrics and running water. Tons of storage space. Walk-in pantry. Breakfast nook with bar stool seating. Room for eat in kitchen (I can't stand separate "formal" dining rooms - waste of space.) Room for a computer with recipes/a recipe program installed (networked to the other computers in the house, so Rubi and I can IM each other from across the house. Me: "Hey babe! Whens dinner?" Her: "Whenever the Dominos guy gets here!")
Rubi needs to answer this one too! (hint)

Interviewed
Posted By kevbayer at 3/05/2005 02:31:00 AM
Christopher at What In Tarnation? is doing brief interviews with several bloggers.
I'm a lucky participant!
Here's my Q&A (Questions from WIT):
1. What is the best Star Trek series. Be able to defend your answer. (Yes I need to take that quiz that you have at your blog.) ST:DS9 (Star Trek: Deep Space Nine). Best cast of characters. Not only did it remain firmly entrenched in Rodenberry's universe, it expanded it. It wasn't afraid to shake up the status quo. Characters made decisions, and had to face the repercussions of those decisions (After Worf rescued Jadzia instead of finishing his mission to get info from a spy, Sisko told Work, because of what he did he would probably never get command of his own starship). When other series running at the same time (or the movies) made changes to the Trek-verse, DS9 kept up the continuity and made changes to reflect incidents in the other Trek incarnations.
2. Name one thing that most people would think is unusual that makes you smile. One thing? Dark humor associated with my job.
3. What is your favoritest TV show ever? Stargate SG-1
4. What is one thing you would like to learn how to do by the end of the year? Program PHP
5. Who is your favorite teacher and why? Hmm... this is a hard one. A real teacher (licensed and teaching in a school)? or a mentor that has taught me things? or one of my kids teachers? I'll go with "who was my favorite teacher when I was in school"? Mr. Wooten. He toed the line on what he could get away with in class, without being rude or disrespectful, or too un-politically correct. He encouraged his students to think about common things differently. He encouraged us to be free-thinkers, he excercized our creativity. He made us laugh. Sounds like an obit. But I don't he's dead, just retired.
