The Where You Live Meme

1. How many places have you lived in your life?
Places? Evansville.
House? Six. Again, all in Evansville: My parents house on the north side, an apartment on the west side, a duplex with a crappy landlord on the southeast side, a rental house on the east side, an apartment on the farther east side, and our current house on the farther southeast side.

2. Which was your favorite and why?
Either the apartment on the west side; Horrible apartment complex, but it was my first place with Rubi, we had 2 cats, we could walk just about anywhere we needed (except work and school), and it was cheap - or the apartment on the east side; Spacious, I was not responsible for any maintenance, quiet area (at the time), walking distance to stores.

3. If you could live anywhere for the rest of your life, where would it be?
Anywhere with Rubi. Okay, I know, that's cheesy. Someplace spacious, someplace with nice scenery, someplace that doesn't get too hot or too cold, and someplace that is still relatively close to family. Will I ever really live there. Probably not. We'll probably stay in Evansville the rest of our lives.

4. What would your ideal home have in it?
Family. Shelves and shelves of books. Lots of space, room for computers, easy chairs, sofas, shelves and shelves of books, rooms for everyone in the family, quiet places, cool places, shelves and shelves of books, rooms for toys, rooms for hobbies, did I mention books?

5. Can you describe your current house?
A work in progress - as everything needs to be repaired, fixed, or updated. A stepping stone to eventually finding a nicer place.

Kinda sorta. I did expect to have kids with Rubi. I never expected to be in Emergency Communications though. I figured I might end up as a DJ or radio show producer or radio production manager somewhere in or near the midwest. Then Rubi and I decided to start a family, and I realized how poorly the radio biz pays unless you're big market morning jock.

Book Review: Iron Dragons

Wow. That pretty much sums up my reaction to reading this book.
Derek P. Gilbert's first published novel is nothing short of excellent. To be honest, I wasn't expecting it to be this good... and I'm tempted to say it's even better than the two novels I've read by his wife.
Iron Dragons is a "fantasy" novel in that it's set in a medieval-type world with dragons, inns along the road, and plenty of ale to knock out the itinerant dragon-slayer. Throw a crazy ragamuffin dog, a priest that's either incredibly brave or incredibly thoughtless, a stable-hand that is quite the man of the world, and another interesting* character or two, and you've got an excellent read. There's action, humor, character development, excellent world-building. And the writing-style is excellent.

Go buy this book. Now.

*I can't explain additional interesting characters or plot twists, as it would so spoil the fun!

Are you KIDDING me with this?

Kellie Pickler. HONEY. You are having dinner with Wolfgang Puck. Sit down and act like an adult before I drag you out back and smack you. Nobody can be THIS dumb for real, and still live.

[pant pant] Whew. I feel better.

What else. It is a crime and a sickening shame that Mandisa isn't up there tonight waiting to be announced as the winner. What an incredible talent.

Did Toni Braxton forget her pants or did she mean to do that? I honestly can't tell.

These little blasts from the pasts are delighting me beyond all reason. Rhonetta? Crystal and her tan? Crazy Dave? The Cher guy? After that episode I went around for DAYS singing "Believe" just like that guy did, and giggling hysterically. I thought Kev was going to kill me.

And the Clay fan that had to pee? I was seriously annoyed that they let him sing, until the real C.A. came out and the guy just lost it.

This is FUN! More to come.

THINKS May 24, 2006

Time once again for some THINKS I've found whilst not doing the house work I probably should have been doing.

First off, Rubi and I have another tentative "date" scheduled about a month from now. We'll be heading to Lousiville (if we can find a babysitter for nine hours) to see Serenity on the big screen.

Thing is, they need at least 200 people to show up to make it work. Otherwise it won't happen. Hopefully we'l find out for sure before we leave town...

I'll never really be able to watch that movie the same way again, since I found Serenity MST3K-ed. Too Funny.

Also, Serenity as portrayed by the Muppets continues. Serenity rocks. Muppets are cool (really! Did you see Farscape?). Serenimuppets are fun. And Kermit the Frog is my hero.

Here's a review of The Best Star Trek, the author says it's DS9. I agree. I wasn't a convert from the start. I watched probably only part of the first season, then skipped seasons two and three almost completely. It wasn't until I heard they were transferring Worf to DS9 because the Klingons were starting trouble again that I thought I'd give it a try. I was hooked, and stuck around enjoying the lengthy story arcs and excellent character development and growth. This was a "Next Generation" where the characters were exactly the same after seasons. These characters had some serious personal crises, had their world-views shattered and rebuilt, had their lives tossed around inside a blender - more than once, and came out stronger characters and a better TV show.

Like to read books? Here's a Book Quiz. It alternately said I was Anne of Green Gables, The Mists of Avalon, or something by Kurt Vonegut.

And for news from ...around the universe? Here's a fun "news" website that takes actual news stories and replaces key words and phrases with science fiction terms.

That's all. I have to go edit some typos in the last post because my 4th-grade daughter is now my editor.

"THINKS": Kev's term combining the words Things and Links: an assortment of images, links, games, trivia, memes, minutia, and whatnot found while browsing and mentioned collectively in a blog or message-board posts.
