MCFAT8: retake

Who wrote that last post? Just shows to go ya what blogging under the influence of influenza and cough-and-cold medicine will do to your test answers.

My correct answers to the MCFAT8 should be:
1: R2-D2.
2: Okay, I got that one correct.
3: Them: "Can I show you the door?"
Me: "No thanks, I saw it on the way in."
4: Greatest Weakness (note correct spelling this time): ...actually, I answered this part of the question correctly last time.
Greatest Strength: I'm still working on one.
5: I also answered that one correctly last time.

MCFAT8

MCF is back with another Astonishing Test.
However, due to the bird flu, I'm late turning in my assignment.

On with the test:

1) From any television show past or present, which character would you wish to have as a sidekick in real life? Valid answers include but are not limited to talking vehicles, intelligent animals, ghosts, sassy maids and more.

The Great Gonzo from the muppets, or maybe Sweetums. Wait - "sassy maids"? Let me think that about that one a bit...

2) 'Guns 'n Roses' might be releasing a new album this year. If you could hear a new CD from a band that's no longer together, possibly with deceased members, what band would that be?

Seriously? GnR? With Catherine Hepburn singing lead again? 80's Petra or Queen.

3) What's the worst thing a person could ask you on a job interview, and how would you respond?

Them: "What's that smell?"
Me: "...the dog?"

4) What do you consider your greatest weakness, and greatest strength?

Greatest Weekness: Cinamon rolls or white cake with white frosting.
Greatest Strength: See #3.

5) Who is your favorite game show host and why? If you don't watch game shows, you can skip this question or choose some random individual you’d enjoy as a host.

I've watched gameshows. For some reason, I think I think I could do a better job.

It's Not Bird Flu

Today, I feel horrible.
That's an improvement over the past couple of days. But I had to go to work today, or I would've needed a note from my doctor. (I'm at work now - feeling horrible.)

Rubi was starting to feel better last night but woke up feeling worse. Rubi had to call-in sick to work today. Poor thing, she sleep almost all day (which is what I did yesterday).

Alexander is almost over it, he acts like he's feeling much better - not quite one hundred percent though.
Catherine seems to be feeling better today also (again, not one hundred percent though). She actually spoke today, and ate about half a pop-tart for breakfast.

I guess we should get rid of our pet chickens, huh.

blech

Alexander was coughing and not feeling well the other day. Rubi called his doctor. The doctor said bring him, it might be strep because strep is going around.
It wasn't. It was the flu.
The next day Rubi, Catherine, and I had the flu.
We still have the flu.

Elizabeth does not.
Lucky her.

Home delivery of food is nice.
And Elizabeth is nice enough to make PB&Js for the kids.

blech.

Podcasts Are A Waste Of Time

Okay not really.

Podcasts are great to listen to during my "commute" to work (all 15 minutes of it, and now that I've finally purchased a car adapter!), and to listen to while I'm doing the dishes, or making lunch.

I download a ton of podcasts daily or weekly, but I only listen to a select few because of time constraints. I've got all the extras archived to listen to whenever I have to drive to Indy for work meetings or conferences.

Here are the podcasts I download. The ones in bold are the 'casts to which I routinely (or at least make an effort to) listen.

Around the World with AiG's Ken Ham (I've listened to about half of these, most are only a minute and half long, just a feed for the same spots you'll hear on Christian radio)
COMM435 (Purdue class) BoilerCast! (Communications and Emerging Technologies class. This feed if from the fall 2005 class, the updated spring 06 feed is locked...)
Crossroads Christian Church Podcast
Firefly Talk Podcast
I Should Be Writing
In Our Time
Mars Hill Church Featured Audio
Mashup of the Week Podcast (this is just a feed for mashed-up tunes, I only listened to a few of them)
OLS274 (Purdue class) BoilerCast! (Organizational Leadership, Applied Leadership Class)
Pastor Dan's Blog
P.I.D. Radio (this is a daily 30-ish minute 'cast, comes out Monday through Friday)
Quirks and Quarks from CBC Radio
http://science.nasa.gov/podcast.xml
Skepticality - Science and Skeptic Thought
Slacker Astronomy
Slacker Astronomy Bonus Features
Slice of Scifi - Sci-if TV and movie news (I've listened to one of these)
The Signal (I've listened to maybe three of these, but I'm getting into them more)
The Survival Guide to Writing Fantasy
Walt Disney World Plugged In (these are great!)
Writing for Christians

Book Review: Bark of the Bog Owl

From Mind&Media, I received a copy of Wilderking Trilogy - Bark of the Bog Owl.

Wilderking Trilogy - Bark of the Bog Owl

Marketed as a fantasy book for all ages, I really enjoyed this book.
And I must be a little slow, because I didn't catch onto the fact that the story is a loose interpretation of the Biblical story of King David's youth until the latter half of the book when the David and Goliath story is reenacted practically word for word!
I read that, and said to myself "Ohhhhh! Duh, now all the other events make a kind of sense in relation to that story too!"
Now this isn't just a retelling of the entire story of David from shepherd to king, though that is the basis for the story. I don't think David ever encountered Feechifolk. But if he had, I'm sure it would have turned out much the way the author conveys. I like the feechiefolk; interesting characters that add to the atmosphere and history of the world in this book.
I'll be reviewing the middle book in the trilogy soon.

Here's the blurb from B&N:
The prophet Bayard arrives at Longleaf Manor, the estate of Lord Errol with an unanticipated announcement. Aidan Errol, Lord Errol’s youngest son, is the Wilderking. But the weight and glory of this pronouncement is yet to be shouldered. In the meanwhile, Lord Errol and his sons attend a Treaty Feast celebrating a pact signed between Corenwald and the Pythen Empire. But Corenwald is double crossed by the Pyrthens and they go to war. The story unfolds as Aidan begins to walk the way of his destiny through the feechifolk and a showdown with the Pyrthen champion Greidawl ending with an epic battle to save the kingdom of Corenwald.

Thinks Vol. I can't remember what number I'm on...

I changed my LJ  to display just the single most recent posting - which is just a linkfest to our various Cafepress stores. I really only use my LJ anymore for the friends list, which has a couple of Star Wars/Star Trek authors on it (one of which wrote the novelization of Serenity) as well as some other weird and interesting links.  Also: my LJ still has the decepticon background.

Speaking of Firefly (the canceled TV series that became the movie Serenity), here's a podcast that nicely sums up what exactly Firefly is. It's cut down from an episode of the Signal podcast, which is now in their second season.

And, since we're talking about podcasts, Did you know DisneyWorld podcasts? How cool is that!

And everyone's favorite TV/movie guy, Joss Whedon, is featured in Marvel podcast.

Back to the Serenity thing... some guy is selling Shiny Shirts and stuff based on the 'verse. Has some pretty shiny stuff too, humorous and all.

And if you're like me (that is: really weird), you like Serenity and Muppets - Why not combine the two?! It's the story of Serenity told with Muppets! (click the artists username and you'll get a list of all 8 parts of the story! Warning: I haven't browsed the rest of his Gallery, so I don't know if it's safe!)

On to other things not Serenity or Firefly or podcasting...

This house: Can I come over? Please? Please?!?

And I guess we'll finish up today with a popquiz. How well do you know this great county of ours?

The wish list from The Amazon

Yes, I've been reading Manolo's shoeblog, why do you ask? (Side note? I want a Manolo long sleeved tee in the worst way.)

Everyone has Amazon wish lists displayed on their blogs/sites, so I'm jumping on the bandwagon. My birthday is in July, FYI. Used books, paperback, whatever, I'm not picky. Also, I clearly have no shame. Heh.

There is a happy land...

A girl I do volunteer work with, S, has been on a couple of mission trips to a country called Myanmar. I had never heard of it, but we were talking about it this morning. She said thick hair and body fat are considered attractive. The body fat thing is because it represents wealth to them.

That's it. My hefty thighs, big uncontrollable hair, and myself are packing a bag and moving to Myanmar. They'd love me there. I'm built like a fertility goddess and my hair...well, there's a LOT of it. (Granted, I have been very happy with it since I cut so much of it off. But it's still pretty darn thick.)

We laughed about it a lot this morning. S said that the people there kept touching her waistline to feel her fat. She said it was very weird and off-putting at first, but soon she figured out (or had explained to her) that they loved it and found it attractive, and felt much better about it.

Funds for my plane ticket can be donated to my Paypal account. Hee.

M.C.F.A.T. Seven

Another pop-quiz from MCF.

1) On Friday, I wrote about The Physics of Superheroes, and cited the example of Schrödinger's cat. What do you think of that theoretical example? Does lack of an observer allow for the simultaneous existence of contrary realities? In other words, if a tree falls in the forest, and no one is there to hear it, does it both make a sound and not make a sound?

I think scientists have too much free time thinking this stuff up.

2) What is your favorite color? Why?

No, Why is not my favorite color. Blue is my favorite color. I guess because that's the color of clothing I wear most... or maybe because my eyes are blue.

3) Choose an actor or actress whose work you enjoy. What is the first project you recall him or her starring in? Next, check IMDB. What was their first starring role, and have you seen it?

No.

4) Who is your favorite corporate mascot? Who is your least favorite?

Least fav: the BK King. He's creepy.
Favorite? Can't think of one...

5) How would you deal with being a superhero? Would you maintain a secret identity, lying to even those closest to you to protect them, or would you operate publicly as a full-time hero?

If I had superpowers, I think I'd use them "secretly", kind of under the table heroics. You know , "Look! It's Elvis" and when every turns to look away from me, I use my powers quickly to accomplish something. I wouldn't don tights and/or a cape and go leaping about or swinging from tree to tree singing... wait - I was about to devolve into a Python sketch there for a minute, sorry.
I wouldn't superhero full-time, and I wouldn't have a flashy name like "Fat Guy"... oh wait....

Our US Representative Podcasts!

How cool is this?
United States Representative John N. Hostettler Launches New Podcast

Nov 21, 2005
WASHINGTON, DC - Rep. John Hostettler (IN-08) announced today that he is rolling out a new Podcast series called Capitol Update. "It's an exciting new way for me to keep in touch with my constituents. With the click of a mouse, this new technology will allow folks in the 8th District to keep abreast of the important issues facing the House of Representatives and the nation today," Hostettler said.

Not his appendix

Alexander is fine.
They did a cat scan of his appendix and there were no problems.
They said his bowels were probably just spasming from being sick. He got a prescription for an antispasmodic and an anti-nausea.
He charmed all the ladies working in the ER last night, and they all signed his coloring book they gave him.
I'm sure Rubi will post a more thorough and interesting update to this as she finds time.

slacking

I admit it.
I've been slacking on posting lately.
Rubi's made four entries since my last.

The family has been sick with some kind of stomach ailment since Wednesday. Rubi is still suffering from it (and she still blogs...), Alexander we thought was over it, but started crying again tonight, felt feverish, and complained of abdominal pain. Rubi called the after-hours clinic and they said to take him to the ER. Rubi thinks they are concerned it might be his appendix.  He and Rubi are there now - I'm at work.

Well, color me rude.

I just got an email from the owner of the site I was talking about. I had emailed her regarding shipping charges on two separate orders. I'll only be charged shipping for one order.

So, apology from me. (Not that she reads this, but I messed up so I apologize!)

This still means that I can't use my gc's to preorder the $19 Basic Grey pack I wanted, but I'll just splurge on lots of small embellishments instead! Whee! Off I go!

Dilemna.

I'm so frustrated. I want to support the little guy, but sometimes they make it hard.

I moved to a brand new scrapbooking website. My previous scrapping online home was just too big and too political, and just no fun anymore. Someone I know locally is on the DT for another place, so I thought I'd try it out. I love the place, and love the people there. I want to shop there to support them.

But darn it. The place I used to hang out was great about shipping. They charged only actual shipping costs. Which seems like common sense to me. It makes me crazy to pay through the nose for shipping on something, to have it arrive in a padded envie with a 67-cent postage sticker on it. What, it's not enough I shop at your store, you have to make a huge profit on shipping and handling too? ("Handling charges" are a hot button for me. Just mail it to me, don't feel it up.) So the huge shipping charges are a turnoff for me. I have 3 LSS' here in town, so I only shop online for things that I can't get at any of them. Oftentimes, it's one small item. And I refuse to pay three times the cost of the item for shipping.

Now I've got $14 worth of gift certificates to this new place. I was all jazzed about shopping there. But it's all complicated. I've got 2 g.c.'s, but you can only use one per order. So you have to place two separate orders, and they will combine the order into one package. What do you want to bet that I will still have to pay for two orders worth of shipping. Which, in this case, will be about $12.

It's just all complicated and messy, and makes me not want to shop there. Not a good idea for a new online scrapping store trying to get up and running. There are about 17 billion of them out there - competetive policies are a definite requirement.

Rant over. Whew, I feel better.
