Reverse M.C.F.A.T.

This time, MCF gives us the answers and we have to come up with the questions - and he'll award points!
I'm a little late on this one - but at least I participated.
I tried to be as... unusual as possible.

1. Howie Mandel and Gilbert Gottfried.
Who has MCF modeled his superhero looks and voice after?

2. Because I was bored.
Uhh... MCF?  Why did you redecorate the Watchtower in a Spiderman theme?

3. Polly-O string cheese.
What secret weapon did MCF once use to save the world?

4. Sister Christian.
What was the song Evil Lord Vilifarous* once played to lull MCF into a quasi-state of relaxation?

5. Seinfeld; Prison Break; Joey.
Name the three television shows where MCF's mysterious cloaked elbow is slightly visible in a scene of at least one episode.

6. My finger was stuck in a hole in the desk.
Hey MCF! Why didn't you help redecorate the Watchtower after the Spiderman drapes fiasco?

7. A Recorder.
Besides the harpsichord, what is the worst musical instrument ever invented?

8. A refrigerator box.
What is the secret hiding place of MCF's teleportation device?

9. Peter, Cindy, and Dudley.
What is the name of the strange English dish of tacos, jam, and an elderberry milkshake?

10. Jams.
MCF, besides songs by Nightranger, what is your only weakness that supervillains can use to defeat you?

11. Alcohol.
What was the primary cause of the Spiderman decorations fiasco?

12. Goggles.
What is the one item MCF refuses to wear with his superhero costume?

13. April.
Name the female human friend of the TMNT that MCF once blackmailed into helping him redecorate the JLA Watchtower?

14. Hold a pen properly.
What words of wisdom did your superhero mentor give to you before he passed away?

15. Oyster Bay.
What is the name of the grunge band that MCF's secret civilian identity plays the Recorder for?

16. Iceman, Nibbler, and Megatron.
What characters did Peter, Cindy, and Dudley dress as while distracting the JLA so MCF could redecorate the Watchtower.

17. “This can't be a dream; there are no girls!”
What has MCF been known to shout as he rushes into battle with supervillains?

18. He doesn't have one.
What excuse does MCF give when other superheroes ask to use his teleportation device?

19. Change.
Evil Lord Vilifarous once distracted MCF by throwing some of this on the ground at his feet?

20.”Sweet Christmas!”
What is MCF's favorite exclamation?

*Evil Lord Vilifarous does not exist in any known continuity.

Wish List

Chris Pirillo posted his "faux" wish list in his latest newsletter.

It's pretty good, and I can agree with most of them. Add these things to my wish list too (though I'm not too concerned at this point about numbers 5 and 6).

Chris Pirillo's wish list:
(1) World peace;
(2) True instant messaging platform interoperability;
(3) The death penalty for spammers and spyware vendors;
(4) An end to DRM;
(5) Windows Vista Visual Service Pack 1;
(6) OS X on non-Apple hardware;
(7) A mobile communications company that doesn’t suck;
(8) Full U.S. government disclosure on UFOs and ETs;
(9) More friends who aren’t on MySpace; and
(10) A public apology from George Lucas for all three prequels.

Are you in SW Pennsylvania?

Okay, this isn't my place, and I haven't been there. But I'm dying to go, so y'all have to visit on my behalf until I can get there!

Husband, wife, and cute kiddo have opened up The Place, offering coffee, donuts, and smiles. Husband is a Cordon Bleu graduate, which I think pretty much guarantees melt-in-your-mouth yumminess.

Wife/owner says:
Hubby makes doughnuts, from scratch. I make muffin tops and cookies and truffles. Today's muffins were Clementine, chocolate crumble, walnut coffee, pumpkin maple walnut, and cinnamon. Yum! the cookie today was an outrageously tasty mocha cookie. Hubby will be making biscotti, cannoli and many other delicious pastries as we go.

The doughnuts are very cool and unique, but I'm not telling why. You have to go see them for yourself. Same with the decor. I've seen pics, and am dying to see it in person. Go do it for me!

Directions are as follows:

We're just sw of PIttsburgh, off I-79 Bridgeville exit. Take 50 west until you hit the big town of Cecil and we are just past the fire department on the right.

They had a soft opening, unannounced, no banners, signs, etc. And they sold out. Must be good stuff. Go, visit, eat, tell the owners I said hi!

Lunch

I had Turkey for lunch. What'd you have?

Also, to paraphrase an email I got at work today (yes, I'm at work now - I'll be here on Christmas too), anyway - to paraphrase an email I got;

While you're being thankful today, take a moment to be thankful for the men and women in uniform, both locally and around the world, who spend their holidays protecting you. It's not just the military thousand of miles away, it's also your local police officers, firefighters, Emergency Medical workers, and countless others who take time away from their own family to protect yours.

Happy Thanksgiving! Now that you've gorged on Turkey, take a quiz about turkey!

Too much fun

Yesterday was Catherine's birthday. I had to work dayshift, so just before I left for work, she got to open her presents from me and Rubi.
After work, we went to Rubi's parents house for dinner, cake, and more presents.
Every gift she opened, she squealed "I love it!!".
Then on to my parents house for a short visit.

This morning Catherine came into our bedroom about 4 a.m. crying because her ear hurt. Uh-oh. She's been congested for a few days, fighting off whatever crud Elizabeth and I have been fighting off.  She spent of the day sleeping on the couch.
Rubi got her into the doc this afternoon - it's just an ear infection. Later, she fell asleep while waiting for the kids to get out of school, and then on the way home she threw up in the van.

I guess she just had too much fun yesterday.

Oh, and another thing?

Kev's going to FLIP OUT when he reads this, and the lectures on over-committing myself will NEVER end.

Eek!

Oh, this is rich. I'm a cheer coach. If you've known me for any length of time, you're laughing hysterically right now. No, really. See, Elizabeth is a cheerleader for Upward at her school. Last year I assisted my friend L., who was the coach for Elizabeth's squad. This year I agreed to assist L. again, and was more than happy to do so. I had a great time last year, and was looking forward to it. But I certainly didn't feel confident enough to coach on my own.

Now one of the other coaches has dropped out, leaving one squad coachless. We haven't even had our first practice, so the girls don't know the difference. L. just called me, begging me to coach in this girl's place. She's been hinting at it anyway, just got a bit more strident when this other girl dropped out. She said I can pick my squad, so I'll have Elizabeth, and a couple other girls that I know and like. (And more importantly, are well behaved and easy to work with. Hey, I'm willing to help, but I'm not a martyr.)

I feel pretty good about teaching the chants and cheers, it's creating a pompon routine that's terrifying me. I have several songs in mind, but the dance itself...hence the "Eek" in the title. I want to watch some video of other squads to get ideas, I just have no idea where to look. Guess I'll head over to YouTube and see what I can find. [bites nails]

Early Reading Meme

Carrie did this meme on her blog

1. How old were you when you learned to read and who taught you?

I honestly can't remember. I remember getting gold stars in kindergarten during reading time though.

2. Did you own any books as a child? If so, what’s the first one that you remember owning? If not, do you recall any of the first titles that you borrowed from the library?

I had the usual Doctor Seuss books and books in the same format.  The three I specifically remember were "Are you my mommy" (Not Dr. Seuss), "Cat in the Hat", and a Woodsy Owl book that I had my mom read me practically every night before bed until I was like 18 (kidding).  The lead human character in that Woodsy Owl book looked just like Fred from Scooby Doo, except he was part of a group of friends out riding motorcycles in the woods.

3. What’s the first book that you bought with your own money?

Not a clue here.  I probably actually bought a GI Joe comic with my own money before I actually bought a book. However, I might have bought something at the school book fairs.

4. Were you a re-reader as a child? If so, which book did you re-read most often?

I really don't remember actually sitting down and really reading a good book until I was in 4th grade. I pulled a Hardy Boys book off the classroom bookshelf and I haven't stopped reading since.  After that, I pretty much had a novel with me at all times.

5. What’s the first adult book that captured your interest and how old were you when you read it?

Do the Hardy Boys novels count as "adult books"? That's probably it. I was in 4th grade. After that, I was reading whatever looked interesting. Maybe Tom Sawyer or Huck Finn... I know I had to read those in school at one point and really enjoyed them.

6. Are there children’s books that you passed by as a child that you have learned to love as an adult? Which ones?

I know there are a ton of books that many people read when they were kids that I have never read. The Anne of Green Gables books that my wife loves, for instance.  The Wizard of Oz. Some of the other "classic" childrens books.
I've found lately that many books marketed as "YA" or "Young Adult" are just as good as mainstream "adult" books.

Why?

Why: Do I still have this dangblasted cold/sinus thingy? It's been three weeks!

Why: Are some people paying over a grand for a video game system?

Why: Do people go shopping the day after Thanksgiving?  (Okay, I admit it - Rubi has found some really good deals that she's going to get.  But I can't abide that crush of people and the lines).

Why: Can't I get my WindowsXP folders to remember their settings?

Why: Can't I think of anything else to write?

Cool Heroes News

November 16, 2006 (New York, NY) - On the NBC smash hit Heroes, time-
traveling fanboy Hiro Nakamura is insanely obsessed with Star Trek. TV
Guide magazine has gotten word that Hiro's father will be played by
Trek icon George Takei (Sulu) (in the November 27 issue; on newsstands
Thursday, November 23). The new character will be introduced in a
January 29 cliff-hanger.

"It was one of those lightning-bolt ideas," creator Tim Kring tells TV
Guide.

Masi Oka, who plays Hiro, is also over the moon. "This is absolutely
brilliant!" the Tokyo-born actor tells TV Guide. "Hiro's father is
this big honcho who shows up in America with his bodyguard. He has
this whole elaborate scheme to kidnap his son and take him back to
Japan."

Adds Oka, "I just hope I get to say, 'Dad! Sulu is my hero, not you!'
The sci-fi fans would love it!"

Takei is getting more attention of late and recently filmed an
installment of the Star Trek New Voyages, reprising his role of Sulu.
The Los Angeles Daily News had this article about the recent filming:

Almost forgot...

Got so wrapped up in all things Joss and Joss alumni that I neglected House. (Can we count that as Joss stuff? We've had Michelle Trachtenberg, Claire Kramer, and a few others.) Ahem. Anyway, am I the only one that can't watch lately without cringing? I'm completely unspoiled, but I have a feeling Mr. Cranky is about to crash and burn big time. Tritter stalking him, Wilson's accounts frozen, John Laroquette committing suicide under his watch, and whatever unapproved drug he is going to give that guy next week...eep.

Miscellany

A favorite topic of mine. Story of my life: bits of this and that. That's okay, I'm never bored.

Yep, the craft show was awesome. So very flattering that my goodies were such a big hit. I can gloat a bit, because I can't take the credit for it. My mother came up with this years ago, I just resurrected it. She's so cool. Next show is December 9th and 10th in Santa Claus, IN. You should come and visit me. Elizabeth will give you a free sample, and I'll sell you things!

Kevin is awesome, but he won't tell you. He surprised me with goodies for the upcoming show: aprons for Elizabeth and I, printed with our logo. I was way excited, making all kinds of high pitched sounds. We're going to be so cute.

Catherine will be five on Sunday. I was walking behind her at the big kids' school today, and had a moment of "where did my baby go?". Got all choked up. She's so big.

Alexander did us proud this week. It's book week at school. Uh, was book week. It's Friday night, isn't it? Anyway, he was invited to be a guest reader for the other kindergarten class. Thursday he walked down to the other classroom, sat in a chair, and read "There's a Wocket In My Pocket" to the class. I stood in the back, taking pictures, sniffling, and wiping my eyes. He was SO darling. The teacher stopped me on the way out of the classroom afterwards to tell me how charming and sweet he is.

Christmas season is in full swing for us, and it's not even Thanksgiving yet. All three kids are preparing for Christmas musicals both at church and at their schools. Rehearsals are running me ragged, but it's fun.

More frivolous stuff now. How awesome is Bones this season? I'm so invested in this show: snarling and hissing at Cam every time her wretched face appears on screen. Cooing over Jack and Angela, and just dying for that first Bones and Booth kiss. And Zack! I want to squeeze him. He's so darned clueless and adorable. My favorite line from last week? "Zack, you be Dr. Brennan." "I don't know what that means." I absolutely howled with laughter. And then sobbed my way through the ending of the show. Watched "Man On The Fairway" afterwards. I'd forgotten how very much I miss Dr. Goodman. Can't we bury Cam alive and bring Goodman back? Or at the very least, send her away in disgrace? I don't care why, just make her gone.

**Geek alert, Geek alert**

Maybe it's all the Boreanaz, but I'm also reviving my Jossverse love. Wallowing in all things Angel, Buffy, and Firefly. The soundtracks, the fanvids, the DVDs, the fanfic. (Yes, I'm a hardcore Joss geek. I love it all.) With a little side of Witchblade. Is it a crime or WHAT that Witchblade never made it to DVD? Le sigh...my VHS tapes of the series weren't all that great to begin with, and they're declining steadily over the years.

One more Jossverse geek thing: Have you heard Michelle Dockery sing Mal's Theme? So so awesome. If you haven't, go find it. It's the ultimate in fan geekery, but just so darned GOOD.

Is that all? All I can think of at the moment.

What a week(end)

Yes. I know it's been a week since I've posted anything - even a goofy quiz or meme.

And I didn't even get to watch Heroes because I had to work!!

Last week was quite hectic and I didn't find time to post anything. I even had four days off from work in a row! But we had so much stuff to do that I didn't have time to check my email let alone write something for the blog.

Rubi and I spent Thursday and Friday of last week shopping for supplies for a craft show over the weekend. (Yes, at the last minute.) Rubi was selling boxed cobbler mixes and jars of potato soup mix at her table at the craft show. She almost sold out Saturday, and I had to go shopping again that night for more supplies. She got up early Sunday and spent several hours putting together more mixes and almost sold out again Sunday!
I was ...stressed both mornings as we rushed around the house putting the finishing touches on the products, packing up, and getting to the show at the last minute (or later). We finished setting up Saturday morning as the first people were coming in the door. Luckily, the show was held on three separate floors of a building, so it was still a while before the customers made it up to the 3rd floor where Rubi's table was set up. She had a niche product though, and did really well at the show. Sunday morning we actually got to the show several minutes after it started... but it was a Sunday morning, and there weren't that many shoppers there that early.

While Rubi and Elizabeth were at the craft show both days, the two little kids and I spent the day running more errands - which mostly consisted of us delivering things to Rubi that she either forgot to take, or needed more of as the days progressed.

Oh, and Sunday afternoon while Rubi and Elizabeth were at the show, the van I was driving broke down! That van belongs to my in-laws, but we were borrowing it because our van has been sitting in our driveway for two months because it needs a really expensive repair job. Now we're down to just my car. We all fit in it - but during the school week we also have two other kids that we drive to school, and with them in the car, we all won't fit. We have to juggle our morning schedule to make that work until our van gets out of the shop, hopefully later this week if they don't find too much other stuff wrong with the van that need to be fixed right away to get it running. Luckily, I'm off work the next three days, so I won't need a vehicle to drive to work, or a ride there and back, those days. Hopefully our van will be back by the time I have to go back to work.
After that four-day weekend, I'm back to work for a 7pm-7am shift. I normally work 3pm-11pm. But! Then I'm off for three more days due to some creative scheduling.
As a matter of fact - my schedule has kind of been like that for about the past month or so... I've scheduled several vacation days so that I'd work two or three days, then get a three or four day "weekend", then back to work for two or three more days, and then another three or four days off. Some of the days I did work though were often crazy schedules like today. It seems like I've rarely worked my actual shift in the past few weeks. I've either had a twelve-hour overnight, or I'd work days, or a regular eight-hour overnight shift, or some crazy combination.
After this three day weekend, I go back to at least a couple of regular four-day weeks (that's how my work rotation runs, four days at work, then two days off, four on, two off). But I still won't be back to a completely normal schedule. I've got some dayshifts, some 3rd shifts, some 12 hour shifts, and some of my regular 2nd shifts thrown in for good measure. Plus I've got a block of vacation time scheduled in the latter half of December - nine days off. Then I get back to work just in time for the Christmas holidays and I work some crazy shifts then too!
I don't think I'll be back to a relatively normal schedule until after the New Year.

Happy Birthday WSWI!

WSWI AM820 is 25 years old today!

This is the college radio station I worked at from 1991 through 1995. It's where Shane and I hosted "The Adventures of Kevin & Shane" on the morning show. It's where I met Edward J. It's where my taste in music greatly expanded.

It seems like there is something else I'm forgetting that happened there...
What was it?

Oh! Right...  It's where I met my beautiful wife!

Render unto Caesar

Uh... Hello? I don't like paying taxes as much as the next guy.
But seriously?  "...he and his employees are workers of God and therefore exempt from paying taxes..."

Really?  Jesus even said to give to Caesar what was his.

Give us all a bad rep why don't you.

There has to be a better way to refute evolution than by evading taxes.

Squealy fangirl stuff.

Kev's been a busy blogger. Catching up.

Oh, crumb. Another Buffy comic? I do not like them, Sam I Am. Comic books annoy me on some level: the art (That looks NOTHING like David Boreanaz! Argh!), and the insane, seemingly random use of the lettering. Regarding this one, I always felt like the Dawn-as-key plotline was baloney, so it's a possibility that it will just annoy me more. Dawn and her shiny shiny hair and her GetoutgetoutGETOUT! Meh. I liked her after she grew up some.

Ahem. Moving on. House and Bones and Heroes, oh my! [Does Numfar's dance of joy]

Must talk about Bones first, because I'm just so very delighted that my show is back. I went right out of my mind when Booth said to look around the Hyperion Hotel. And Kali Rocha (Halfrek/Cecily) was the dead girl's mom. So very very cool. And Kev was right, I totally called it, but it was closer to the halfway point. I'm not THAT good. And I just said that one of the other little girls was the killer. Didn't know which one.
I love this mix of characters, even Cam in a love-to-hate way. Everyone's got the perfect mix of chemistry, be it romantic, friendly, or slightly-antagonistic-coworker-who-you-really-like. I heard the ratings this week kinda stunk, which just shocked me. This is one of those rare shows that is just a delight every week. Witty dialogue, engaging storylines with the perfect combination of a long-running arc and a victim of the week, and a great cast. The previews for next week are killing me. Hurry, hurry, next Wednesday!!

House next. I'm not familiar with David Morse, although my friend B says she remembers him from St. Elsewhere. I'm also totally unspoiled, so I was surprised to see that he was a cop. Bad on him for pulling House over. I've no clue what New Jersey law is like, but the guy wasn't in uniform, probably wasn't on duty, and had the most baloney reasons for arresting him ever. Apparently, Vicodin causes your pupils to constrict, not dilate. So say the forum posters over on TWoP. Also? It's NIGHT, you moron. Of course his pupils are dilated. Yours are too. So go arrest yourself. However, just let me paddle over to the shallow end of the pool for a moment to say: Angry House getting arrested? Mrow. How does he do it? (Hi Kev. Love you!)
Moving back out of the shallow end, I'm loving sassy Cameron, standing up to house. Go, girl! And Chase running around behind Foreman, kind of nipping at his ankles (Pay the man!), just cracks me up. This is a fun show.

Heroes? Nothing has made me happier than "Waffles! Whoo!" yet, but still interesting things going on. Niki/Ikin is freaking me out. What's her deal? Oh, right. I've sworn off spoilers so I have to wait and find out, don't I? And another happy Buffy moment for me. Niki's husband D.L. was Forrest in season 4 of Buffy. Hi, Leonard Roberts! Way to be typecast! (Well, honestly. Let's cast him as yet another angry good guy, who thinks the end justifies the means.)

Wow. That was a whole lot of TV talk right there. Sorry, but my shows have been MIA for a month, and now I'm so terribly happy that they're back. Yay!

Oh. One more thing. Since I HAVE a nine year old daughter, Bones gave me the creepy-crawlies on a whole extra level than it usually does. Ick. Is the "little miss whatever" pageant circuit really that scary? Corsets, hair dye, yanking out their baby teeth to put pretty false ones in? I have no words.

Tuesday and Wednesday TV

Tuesday 10-31-06: House.
Rubi got me watching this.  However, I had to work this night, and missed it.  I only got to watch the really good parts on tape the next day when Rubi sat me down to show me. I haven't had time to watch the entire thing straight through. From I did see though, it looks like the actual medical story wasn't really integral to the story at all except for the fact that the show is about a doctor that solves weird medical problems.  The main story line though, is setting up a plot-arc for several more episodes and seems very interesting.  However, the cop character out to get House is rather creepy.  Very soft-spoken, subtle body language, very "bad cop".  Seems to enjoy abusing his position as a cop.

Wednesday 11-1-06: Bones.
Rubi also got me watching this show, because we're Angel fans. I really enjoy this show. The interaction between the characters, especially the supporting cast, is fun and entertaining. This was another good episode. Rubi had it solved about 20 minutes into the show.

I'm at work now, so I'm missing Smallville. I'll have to watch it either tomorrow after BSG or maybe Sunday night.

Buffy Comic

The artist on the forthcoming Buffy Season 8 comic book recently hinted at background material for the plotline...

He says "...I have to watch S5 pronto, because apparently there's some reference there that I WILL need...""
What does this mean? Apparently, one of the plots of the new comic book will examine Dawn's "Key-ness"...  I always thought that was a plot thread that could have been further developed beyond Season Five, even though the point for it wrapped up in S5 - it still had potential.

This comic is set for a March 2007 release, and Joss Whedon is writing the first four issues and overseeing the entire project - which is supposed to be more than 20 issues. It will be added to my pull list; and hopefully Rubi will read it too.  She tried to read the Angel comics and just couldn't deal with the panel layouts and the art - and she tried to read a couple of Buffy novels and said they were poorly written. (I tired the Angel comics too, and thought the stories were boring and pointless - they didn't continue the story line after Not Fade Away). I don't think I've read a Buffy novel. But this comic I'm looking forward too - that and the Firefly comics that are coming out.
